Window7
Modified By The Coolest on 2/16/2010 7:33:42 AM

I've just signed up and was verified.
I guess I can't compain about all the free to use software.

I do have to wonder why Microsoft provides the latest and greatest Windows Server OS but not the workstation versions?

Why can't we also get Windows 7 Home Premium or professional licenses?

My college is not registered for MSDNAA (Holon Institute of Technology located in Holon, Israel), so I can't get a Windows7 that way either.

I believe that the reason Dreamspark doesnt carry workstation OS's is because of MSDNAA. If they put all the software, or even just the OSes from the MSDNAA program onto dreamspark, they would lose people's interest in MSDNAA. Also they would lose some money, because students still purchase Windows versions, so if they got them for free by being a student and using Dreamspark, they wouldn't need to purchase them. MSDNAA is usually for the CS departments so students dont have to pay extra for software they need. Dreamspark is basically giving all students access to professional software, so possibly in they future, they would buy it. hope this helps!!

Re: Window7

I think the basic rationale is that most students can afford the academic pricing for Windows 7 (as low as $30USD, or bundled with almost all new PCs), whereas the $1000+ price for server editions puts it out of range for most.

However, you can use the DreamSpark copy of Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is essentially the server edition of Windows 7) and get almost all of the same features (as well as some new ones, like Hyper-V). You need a 64-bit system, because R2 is 64-bit only. ; This site has tips:
