Masters degree... good idea?

I just graduated in March and am considering, in a couple years, to go back for my MBA. I'm kind of in a toss-up though... do you think it's better to just gain experience through my job or to go back and get more schooling? Both are really valuable.

And when and if I decide to go back to school to get my MBA, I'm not sure if I should enroll in evening/night classes and keep my job, or to take a couple years off. I'd love to hear what you guys have done or if you have any opinions on what I should consider doing!

Re: Masters degree... good idea?

I've been in this dillemna for the past 2 years.0; I decided to get a second BA in hospitality because newspapers are closing left and right, so my degree in Journalism is losing value fast. ; Maybe somewhere down the line I can actually pursue a job in journalism.

In your case, I'd recommend maintaining your job and enrolling in evening/night classes.&#160; Right now, it's difficult to find a job and having one is a blessing.&#160; This summer I've met people with years of experience in multiple industries that can't find any jobs. ; Businesses are closing left and right, and I would hope that there is a bit more job security where you are.

It may be different in a few years and maybe the economy will be back on track, but for the time being embrace your job.  Once you're ready to consider an MBA, then you should consider your options.

I hope that this helps :)

Re: Masters degree... good idea?

I work as a Peer Career Advisor at my school and have seen similar situations. At last year's Career Expo (one of the many career fairs we throw throughout the year) we had 127 employers come to campus but this year so far we only have 60. What many students are doing and I also think is wise investing, is returning to school. Having a Master's degree will make you more marketable and also more respectable to employers than those who simply have a Bachelor's (not that there's anything wrong with having a Bachelor's). Nationwide enrollment at colleges and universities is skyrocketing as is the case with other past recessions. I hope you do decide to go back to school.

Re: Masters degree... good idea?

I definitely want to keep my options open. I love my job now... so we'll see what happens in  future. Financially, going back any time REAL soon would be hard. So maybe I'll just save up and put some of my money away each month towards going back for my masters. If I decide not to pursue an MBA... HEY, at least I'll be able to use that money saved on something nice like a brand new car :)

Re: Masters degree... good idea?

I've recently graduated and was having the same thoughts as well. I discussed it with one of my very experienced professors, and he told me that MBA can teach you so many important stuff, if taught properly. Nevertheless, he also told me that, while MBA can help you a lot in your career, it isn't necessary to reach a high managerial position. Also, it is generally better to gain a couple of years of hands-on experience before registering fro MBA. Some colleges don't even enroll you in the MBA program unless you have hands-on experience.

I hope this helps somehow!
